The executive coordinator of CopernicusLAC Chile, Macarena Pérez, participated in an official visit to the facilities of the European Space Agency (ESA) ESRIN, the European center of excellence for the exploitation of Earth observation missions, in Rome, Italy, together with the Chilean ambassador to Italy, Ennio Vivaldi.
The visit was part of an invitation by ESA to hold working meetings aimed at strengthening technical cooperation and exploring new joint opportunities. During the meetings, the Mirador Copernicus project was presented. It will be implemented by the Museo Interactivo Mirador (mim) in Chile, which is scheduled to open in 2027 and stands out as an initiative that seeks to bring Earth observation closer to the public and promote the use of satellite data for informed decision-making.
“It was an excellent opportunity to publicize the services we are developing and the center’s projections for its work at the regional level, as well as to promote active collaboration with our technical counterparts on key issues,” emphasized Macarena Pérez.
During the visit, a parallel meeting was also held with the Italian Space Agency (ASI), during which possible collaborations were discussed regarding the current and future services of CopernicusLAC Chile.
The meetings with ESA were evaluated as highly positive. Technical aspects related to the Urban Atlas and Land Cover and Land Use services were addressed, and the willingness to continue working together on dissemination actions and collaborative activities was reaffirmed.
European authorities highlighted the relevance of Mirador Copernicus, describing it as an innovative initiative with a high impact on citizens, which will bring technical and scientific information to a wide audience. Its implementation represents a unique opportunity for Latin America and the Caribbean to highlight the importance of satellite information in sustainable development and land management.
