Gabriela Williams is an associate researcher at CONICET and a member of the Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology Laboratory at the Center for the Study of Marine Systems (CESIMAR). She received her bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco in 2004 and her PhD in biology from the National University of Comahue in 2011. She is a teaching assistant in the General Chemistry department of the Biological Sciences degree program at the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco and collaborates with the Scientific Team of the Argentine-Brazilian Satellite Mission on Sea Color SABIA/MAR. Her research focuses on bio-optical oceanography and the analysis of Patagonian marine ecosystems through satellite remote sensing of sea color, with a particular focus on the study of phytoplankton dynamics and the environmental conditions that regulate its spatial-temporal variability, as well as various aspects of marine-coastal water quality.

This session summarizes twenty years of research on phytoplankton dynamics and the optical properties of water in GPNs, based on the analysis of satellite data on ocean color. The main ecological patterns observed and their implications for water quality assessment in the region are highlighted. These studies underscore the need for further analysis of the optical properties of coastal waters as a basis for improving water quality and phytoplankton bloom monitoring, especially in the context of the development of future hyperspectral satellite missions.
