Florencio Utreras, director of CopernicusLAC Chile, participates in the EU-LAC Digital Alliance panel

On Tuesday, November 11, the director of CopernicusLAC Chile, Florencio Utreras, participated in the European Union–Latin America and the Caribbean (EU–LAC) Digital Alliance panel, an initiative aimed at strengthening the Global Gateway Strategy by promoting an inclusive and people-centered digital transformation.

The meeting addressed the main thematic pillars of the Digital Alliance, which include Earth Observation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Connectivity, E-Government, Cybersecurity, and Data Governance, highlighting the role of bi-regional cooperation in building an open, secure, and sustainable digital infrastructure.

In addition, the panel included representatives from the public and academic sectors, who discussed the progress and future opportunities of the Alliance following the IV CELAC-EU Summit. Speakers included: Silvia Viceconte, Head of Digital at the European Union’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) for LAC B.2, European Commission; Florencio Utreras, Director, CopernicusLAC Chile; Marco Llinás, Director of the Productive and Entrepreneurial Development Division, ECLAC, and Angel Melguizo, Visiting Researcher, ECFR and Partner, ARGIA Green, Tech & Economics.

During his presentation, Utreras outlined the infrastructure and services developed by the Center, including: Land Cover and Land Use, Urban Atlas, Ocean Coast Monitoring (under development), and Private Cloud, highlighting the importance of Land Cover and Land Use (LU/LC) classification in accordance with FAO standards.

He also emphasized that the satellite data generated is open and freely accessible, reinforcing CopernicusLAC Chile’s commitment to the democratization of geospatial information, scientific development, and regional capacity building in Latin America and the Caribbean.


CopernicusLAC Chile’s participation in this event reflects its active involvement in the global digital cooperation strategies promoted by the European Union and its contribution to regional scientific and technological integration, in line with the sustainability and inclusive digital development objectives promoted by the EU-LAC Digital Alliance.
