The speaker for this session is José Miguel Rubio Iglesias, an engineer (MEng) in Geodesy and Cartography who currently works as a Copernicus In Situ Data Expert at the European Environment Agency (EEA). Since January 2023, he has been responsible for the cross-cutting coordination of Copernicus access to in situ data (also known as the Copernicus In Situ Component) as a member of the EEA’s Copernicus team. He also contributes to the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS) by leading the update of the CLMS hydrographic reference dataset, “EU-Hydro.”

Since January 2023, he has been responsible for the cross-cutting role of coordinating the collection and harmonization of geospatial data sources for the Copernicus program. He will explain the cross-cutting coordination work led by the European Environment Agency (EEA), covering data needs assessment, access to and harmonization of geospatial sources, technical advice to entities responsible for program implementation, and cooperation with data provider networks at the European and international levels. It will also present the expected progress in thematic inventories, licensing agreements, and in situ data use cases, with selected examples from the region. Finally, it will address the future evolution of the in situ component beyond 2027, focusing on closing data gaps, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring the sustainable and cooperative evolution of the system.
