The speakers for this session are Estefanía Pizarro and Alexis Gamboa, methodological analysts from the Department of Statistical Innovation at the National Statistics Institute of Chile (INE). Estefanía is an agricultural engineer and holds a master’s degree in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Chile. Alexis Gamboa is a geographer from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and holds a diploma in Data Science for Public Policy from Adolfo Ibáñez University.

In this session, Estefanía and Alexis will present on the topic of ‘Classification of land use and land cover using time series of satellite images in earth observation data cubes.’ This work involves the construction of a land cover and use map using the R “sits” package, which allows multiple satellite information to be integrated into a data cube structure and classifications to be generated under the concept of “time first, space second”. In this case, Sentinel-2 and TanDEM-X satellite products are used. The construction of this map for mainland Chile is currently being carried out sequentially in nine macro-zones that group together the 56 provinces of Chile. The results for the Maule-Ñuble macro-zone will be presented.presented, which included site-specific calibrations due to the use of different satellite sensors.
