The intensification of the effects of climate change and extreme events such as drought and heat waves, among others, are generating significant changes in the structure and dynamics associated with vegetation in our country, rapidly compromising the ecosystem benefits that it provides to society on a daily basis.
In this context, data from satellite sensors such as MODIS (Terra and Aqua), OLI (Landsat 8) and MSI (Sentinel 2A and 2B), allow studying the trend of primary productivity and phenology of vegetation through time series that represent the intra- and inter-annual variation through spectral indices.
The vegetation spectral indices, which represent the ratio between the energy reflected by the set of leaves in infrared and red wavelengths, are considered good indicators of the potential primary productivity of vegetation and efficient tools for continuous monitoring of ecosystem changes at different spatial and temporal scales.
From vegetation indices it is possible to obtain metrics that mark critical points in the development of populations and communities (for example, beginning and end of productive season, biomass accumulation in productive season, among others), which are associated with intrinsic characteristics of them and their responses to changes in the environment.
The objective of this seminar is to present the use of phenological metrics and temporal trend analysis obtained from the EVI vegetation index (MODIS sensor), in the structural and compositional characterization of the Mediterranean vegetation of Chile and in the analysis of the trend of its primary productivity against the effect of drought events and heat waves that are currently affecting it.
