Samaná Bay is located in the northeast of the Dominican Republic and covers an area of ​​approximately 850 km². Its shallow, warm waters, along with its moderate currents and the absence of predators, make it one of the world's premier destinations for humpback whale watching and one of the most important breeding habitats in the Caribbean.

In addition, the bay is part of the Dominican Republic Marine Mammal Sanctuary, an area designated for the conservation of marine mammals and their habitats.
