Large river systems and their habitats, such as floodplains and wetlands, are crucial for human needs but are experiencing significant biodiversity loss and declining ecosystem services due to threats like dam construction, climate change, and land use changes. To conserve these ecosystems, it’s vital to understand their functions and interactions. Remote sensing, combined with traditional methods, offers valuable tools for monitoring and managing these systems. The Pantanal wetland, a well-preserved freshwater system, serves as a model for studying the role of biodiversity and ecosystem services on various spatial scales. This study illustrates the serious conservation risks that the Pantanal faces soon, given the current climate-change scenario and the accumulation of dam building projects in this region.
